The Science Behind Posture and Mood
Most people think posture is purely physical.
Stand up straight.
Pull your shoulders back.
Stop slouching.
But posture is about far more than how you look.
Research increasingly shows that posture can influence confidence, stress levels, mood, energy, breathing, and even the way other people respond to you socially.
At Absolute Studios, posture is not something we approach through rigid “sit up straight” corrections.
We approach it through movement.
Because posture is ultimately a reflection of how your body functions.
And that is where Dynamic Reformer Pilates can make a huge difference.
The Link Between Posture and Mood
During a recent Absolute Studios coaching discussion, co owner Luke Meessmann explained the connection between posture and emotional state like this:
“If you move better, you’re going to hold yourself better.”
He continues:
“If you’re able to hold yourself with better posture, if you’re able to move more gracefully, you are going to feel better 100% as a result of that.”
This is not just motivational language.
There is growing scientific research suggesting posture can influence mood, confidence, fatigue, and stress responses.
Studies published in journals including Health Psychology and Biofeedback have found that more upright posture may positively affect mood, reduce fatigue, and improve self esteem compared to slumped positioning.
Luke explains it through a very human lens:
“You look at someone that’s depressed, that is their posture. And that becomes a self fulfilling negative loop.”
Then the opposite:
“You look at someone standing open, shoulders back, life’s good.”
At Absolute Studios, we see this every day.
Clients often arrive feeling disconnected from their bodies, stiff from desk work, overwhelmed by stress, or lacking confidence in movement.
And over time, movement changes not just how they move, but how they carry themselves.
“The World Meets You Differently”
One of the most powerful moments from the discussion came from Absolute Studios instructor Vincent Lewis Jamerson.
“When you stand with good posture, the world meets you differently.”
That single sentence captures something people instinctively understand.
Posture changes perception.
Not only how you see yourself, but how others respond to you.
Vincent explains:
“The world interacts with you as a more powerful, more confident individual.”
Research supports this idea.
Studies on nonverbal communication suggest posture influences perceptions of confidence, authority, emotional state, and social presence.
This is partly why “power posing” became such a widely discussed topic in psychology and performance coaching.
Luke references this directly:
“It’s why Hollywood psychologists tell actors before auditions to do a hero pose.”
He even shares an example from an Absolute Studios client working in celebrity PR:
“Before you go and do the interview or the audition, hero pose, 30 seconds. Instant mood shift.”
Why Modern Life Damages Posture
Poor posture is rarely caused by laziness.
Modern life simply asks the body to spend too much time in positions it was never designed to stay in for hours every day.
Sitting at desks.
Looking down at phones.
Driving.
Stress.
Fatigue.
Reduced movement variety.
Over time, the body adapts.
Hip flexors tighten.
Glutes weaken.
Thoracic mobility reduces.
Shoulders round forward.
Breathing mechanics change.
And eventually, posture starts becoming the body’s default pattern.
That is why posture cannot simply be “fixed” by forcing yourself to sit straighter.
The body needs strength, mobility, awareness, and control.
That is where Reformer Pilates becomes so effective.
How Reformer Pilates Improves Posture
At Absolute Studios, posture work is built into almost every class.
Not through aesthetic corrections.
Through movement quality.
Pilates strengthens the deep stabilising muscles that support the spine, pelvis, shoulders, and ribcage.
It also improves body awareness, breathing mechanics, mobility, alignment, and muscular balance.
Vincent explains that many Pilates exercises train multiple systems simultaneously:
“We’re understanding pelvic orientation, deep abdominal stabilisation, spinal articulation, scapula stabilisation.”
That combination matters because posture is not isolated to one body part.
It is a full body system.
The reformer itself also creates a unique environment for posture training because the moving carriage constantly challenges stability and alignment.
Clients cannot simply “switch off.”
They have to stay connected to how they move.
Why Awareness Comes First
One of the key themes throughout Absolute Studios coaching philosophy is awareness.
Luke describes Pilates as a mindful movement practice:
“To do Pilates well, you have to acutely focus on what muscles you’re trying to engage in the present moment.”
This is what creates the mind body connection Pilates is known for.
And often, people realise they have been compensating through poor movement patterns for years without noticing.
That awareness can be transformative.
Especially for clients dealing with stress, pain, injuries, low confidence, or postural discomfort.
Because once you become aware of how you move, you can begin changing it.
Move Better. Look Better. Feel Better.
At Absolute Studios, our philosophy is simple:
Move better.
Look better.
Feel better.
Luke explains why these three things are deeply connected:
“If you move better, you will look better, and you will feel better as a result.”
Importantly, “look better” is not just about aesthetics.
It is about how you carry yourself.
How confidently you move through the world.
How open, balanced, and connected your body feels.
Vincent adds:
“You remove layers of perceived vulnerability.”
That confidence affects every part of life, from exercise to work to social interaction.
